Hiding Blank Columns on the Notes (Desktop)
What it is: A troubleshooting and formatting technique for ensuring that empty columns in note tables do not print in the final Annual Financial Statements output.
What it's for
Notes in the AFS can have multiple column slots (for different periods or categories), but only columns that contain data should appear when the document is printed. When blank columns start printing unexpectedly, it usually means a sub-note heading was hidden incorrectly or its auto-numbering was disabled — both of which break the printing-control formulas that Draftworx uses to suppress empty columns automatically.
How to do it
Fix blank columns that are printing
- Check whether the affected sub-note heading has an A next to it. If the "A" is missing, auto-numbering has been disabled.
- Select any cell in the Sub-note Heading row, go to Design, and choose Auto-Number Note. This restores the printing formulas and re-activates automatic column suppression.
Hide a sub-note heading without breaking the printing formulas
- Rather than hiding the sub-note heading row (which disables the formulas), go to Format and change the font colour of the sub-note number and heading to white. The heading becomes invisible on screen and in print while the formulas remain active.
- If you need to hide surrounding rows, select the rows above and below the sub-note heading and hide them via Design.
- After these corrections, only columns that contain data will print, and the sub-note heading will be invisible.
Key rule: Never hide the Sub-note Heading row directly — always use the white-font technique instead.
